York St John talent exhibit at national design show

Ten design students have been invited to exhibit their work at the New Designers showcase, taking place in London from 1-4 July 2015. The students are among 3,000 exhibitors all hoping that their designs will receive research and development commissions for new designs and prototypes.

Every year a selected number of students get the opportunity to exhibit at New Designers in London, which is this year celebrating its 30^th anniversary. This prestigious event allows students to network and showcase their talent to major design companies.

One such hopeful is Sam Tindall, a third year BA Design student at York St John. His retro take on a coffee table design has earned him entry into a prestigious Made.com competition, which will see a winning furniture design manufactured and sold by the online furniture and accessories retailer. His coffee table - ‘Kontrast’ - is made from oak veneered birch plywood with white laminate features, sculptural legs and rolling drawers.

Commenting on the opportunity to exhibit at the New Designers showcase Sam, 22, said:

“I feel incredibly privileged to have been selected for New Designers, not only to showcase my product but also to network with a wide range industry professionals. My degree has been invaluable in giving me the skills to design and build my product from scratch.”

Warren Fearn, Head of Programme for BA Design, said:

“New Designers is the largest and most exciting collection of new design talent in Europe. Being part of this show represents a significant opportunity for young talent from this region to launch their design careers. We are particularly excited by the students we are taking this year, who have all worked extremely hard to develop innovative designs in collaboration with local schools and clients such as VITRA furniture, Denby and Ingrid Pears MBE.”
